If your life seems to be a mountain of clutter or a series of crises chained together, then you need realistic advice for managing your stuff and your time in a way which works for your personality.
Although you may fantasize about organized perfection, your real goal should be to find a way to become Comfortably Organized and then to maintain it seamlessly with minimal effort. De-cluttering your life can make you…
- More productive.
- More effective.
- More relaxed.
- Perhaps even happier!
Getting organized is not actually a goal in itself. It is a means to an end: a more comfortable lifestyle which is not frequently interrupted by the crises.
The Cost of Clutter
- Lost productivity – wasted time looking for “lost items”
- Increased stress – clutter items are “unfinished business” hanging around in our minds, whether or not we are aware of them
- Relationship Stress – clutter-ism is usually uneven in the family. Someone else pays a price for our clutter.
- Lost money – buying duplicates, buying organizing systems not used
- “Loss of treasures” which we cannot see or use due to all the clutter
- Dreading coming home – loss of tranquility and ugliness in the home we work so hard to support.
- Social embarrassment and loss - avoidance of invitations to guests or friends because the place is so cluttered
- Sense of failure and being overwhelmed – clutter begets more clutter, reaching the point where it seems out of control.
The physical clutter which is evident in our homes or offices often reflects the natural clutter in our brains. Our brains are huge data-processing machines, but the information is frequently running in circles, avoided, or misinterpreted. Most people have not learned the strategies to deal with brain clutter, and the results may be far-reaching in life:
